Gábor Lázár mutates 2-step, grime and electro prisms with economic yet ravishing effect on Unfold, his solo début LP proper for The Death of Rave. Following an acclaimed split LP with Mark Fell ( which was deployed to stunning effect in Aphex Twin’s live/DJ sets of 2017), the Hungarian artist has harnessed the scything contours and mentasmic vamps of his earlier releases into 8 inexorably funked up frameworks set to brilliantly mess with modern ‘floors. Few dance records in 2018 were as innovative as Gábor Lázár’s Unfold. Lázár’s earlier records were clinical exercises in synthetic minimalism, a style he switches for in-your-face digital maximalism on a phenomenal record that evokes both the clean, white curves of an imagined future and face-melting low end of Sheffield bassline. Unfold also rejects the notion that 'forward-thinking' club music has to be angular and rigid; nothing this year was as funky or full of swing, especially the standout title track and 'Steady', whose filtered chords are enough to make any raver go weak at the knees. Some standout live performances this year include Gábor Lázár, Hiro Kone and Group A. First Lazar: Unfold is surely one 2018’s best records, and live, the Hungarian producer is in complete control of his uniquely urgent strain of club music, propelled by elastic beats and crystalline synths which land like glass mallets. Overall, Atonal’s highlights were the performances that broke the festival’s mold completely. Gábor Lázár’s set on the Wednesday brought a rave spirit to the usually gloomy Stage Null, illuminating the space with flashing LED lamps and digital frequencies that pushed against the space’s challenging acoustics. It was a talking point for lots of people I spoke to afterwards. (Fact Magazine, Berlin Atonal 2018, review)
