Reflex is Gábor Lázár's debut album on Raster-Media. His new album is a collection of seven tracks, featuring an extended sound palette of percussions and synthesizers drawing our attention towards the essential soundscapes of techno while maintaining his distinct, uncompromising and meticulously detailed style. While the tracks do not follow traditional narratives, the album has an evolution: it gently builds up from challenging, unpredictable, and organically composed structures to linear yet playful forms of techno-infused tracks, taking us on a journey from home listening environments to club contexts. A set of seven studies that test the musical limits of Hungarian musician Lazár's unique approach to meticulous groove and micro-permutation. Similar to 2022's Boundary Object, Reflex revels in the plasticity and possibilities of its materials. However, unlike the previous album, which took the listener on a journey from simplicity to complexity, Reflex begins in a challenging abstracted zone and evolves incrementally towards more recognisable and danceable forms of techno.
It's a risky approach requiring hefty cognitive commitment from the off, but the payoff is in the way the music opens up over time, in the process making sense to the body as well as the mind. If the minimal palette contributes to a feeling of sameness across the set, however, this is as disciplined, lean and sharp as Lázár has ever sounded, especially on latter tracks "Receive" and "Execute". Hungarian musician Gábor Lázár has a unique musical fingerprint, aided by the creation of his own production software, and 'Reflex', his debut for the inimitable Raster label, is a bright album of constant turns and surprises. Vivid, evolving synths and bounding asymmetrical percussion clamour together in a blurry, unpredictable mishmash of sounds that evoke Barker's 'Utility' as viewed through a kaleidoscope. The staccato rave stabs of 'Event' strike out a lasting crescendo that extends through later tracks, while 'Message' ushers in more simple techno modulations. (Electronic Sound Magazine)
Easily one of the most disciplined records of the year compositionally and feeling like a return to form for Raster, Reflex is obsessively programmed dance music. Call it “hyper-constructed,” not deconstructed, full of brightly-colored stabs, precise percussive hits and rhythms, and gem-like FM, the entire album seems to maximize tempo and spectrum.
